The 18km Eastern Busway will connect Buranda to Capalaba via Stones Corner, Coorparoo, Camp Hill, Carina, Carindale and Chandler. It will be the eastern link in Brisbane's world-class busway network, slashing bus travel times for thousands of commuters from all over the eastern suburbs.

In June 2008, the Queensland Government approved the project's Concept Design and Impact Management Plan. View the approved alignment maps. Alternatively, you can order a DVD of the approved Concept Design and Impact Management Plan by contacting the project team on 1800 550 277.

The Concept Design and Impact Management Plan protects for a long-term investment in the future of the eastern suburbs. It means we can build the Eastern Busway in sections as the need arises.

The Queensland Government has committed to building the Eastern Busway between the PA Hospital and Main Avenue. Construction of future busway stages between Main Avenue and Capalaba will occur as needed based on traffic levels and funding availability. We will keep the community informed about future works.

Why is an Eastern Busway needed?

The need

  • population growth is placing pressure on our region, our lifestyle and our transport system
  • busways allow buses to bypass peak-hour congestion
  • traffic congestion will worsen on Old Cleveland Road and its adjoining streets as travel demand increases with population growth
  • by attracting more trips onto public transport, the Eastern Busway would help manage growth in car travel along Old Cleveland Road and neighbouring streets
  • the Eastern Busway will absorb travel demand growth for many years and reduce the increase in congestion along the corridor.

The benefits

The Eastern Busway will benefit all residents living along the eastern corridor. It will:

  • slash bus travel times along the Old Cleveland Road corridor (when the busway is completed, trips between Capalaba and the city would be slashed from 54 minutes to about 25 minutes, saving commuters nearly five hours in travel time per week)
  • construction of the section between Buranda and Main Avenue will cut travel times by up to eight minutes (saving commuters nearly 1.5 hours in travel time per week)
  • give people easy access to major destinations including Princess Alexandra Hospital, Stones Corner, Carina and Capalaba business districts, Chandler sporting complex, the University of Queensland via the Eleanor Schonell Bridge, and the Brisbane CBD
  • reduce congestion, pollution and traffic noise along Old Cleveland Road and neighbouring streets
  • take thousands of cars off the roads. For every full bus, there are 40 fewer cars on our roads.
