Over the next 20 years, around 145,000 new homes will be built in Brisbane. Most new residents will be living in suburbs within 10 kilometres of the CBD. Inner city suburbs will experience much of the impact of the city's growth, with more cars on the road and more demand for public transport. The busway network will alleviate these pressures by increasing the frequency of services to inner city suburbs. Services will be so frequent that residents virtually will be able to throw away their timetables. Busways give priority to buses by separating buses from general traffic to offer congestion-free travel and alleviate future gridlock. Busways allow buses to bypass peak hour congestion and carry more people more efficiently. For every full bus there are 40 less cars on the roads. A busway is not like a normal bus route. In fact, it operates more like a train line. Busways are dedicated for buses only - bus trips are fast, frequent and reliable because buses avoid congestion and most traffic lights. People also get to keep their local bus service. Local buses can jump straight onto the busway once they've done their neighbourhood round for a short-cut to the CBD or the next suburb. Busways feature purpose built busway stations including 24-hour security, 'real-time' electronic timetable information, full accessibility for all hearing, visually and mobility impaired people, and offer fast, direct and continuous services between outer suburbs and the heart of the city. The major benefits of using busways are:
Busways also provide the following indirect benefits to the community:
